Foundation plus (ExF+)

Foundation Plus (ExF+)

The Ex F+ Foundation Certificate is developed for individuals who are required to enter or operate within potentially explosive atmospheres but are not directly involved in electrical work. This course provides essential knowledge on hazardous area classifications, types of protection, and safe working principles. It aims to build a strong awareness of potential risks and standard procedures to ensure safety in such environments.

Attendees

This course is ideal for electrical and instrumentation technicians new to hazardous areas. It also suits trainees, apprentices, and newly qualified staff seeking core safety knowledge. The hands-on element helps develop practical skills in Ex cable gland installation and termination. It’s a great preparatory course before advancing to the Ex01–Ex04 Gas and Vapours certification.

Entry requirements

Participants should have basic manual or hand skills, as the course includes practical elements that involve working with tools and equipment.

Duration

The course typically spans around two days, though the exact duration may vary based on the training provider’s schedule.

Delivery

  • It features a combination of theory-based learning and practical exercises, offering a well-rounded training experience.
  • The total guided learning time is between 10 and 14 hours.

The CompEx Foundation Plus (Ex F+) qualification equips participants with a strong introductory understanding of the regulations, standards, and directives relevant to hazardous areas. It is designed to help individuals recognize and safely navigate environments where explosive or flammable atmospheres may exist due to the presence of gases, vapours, or dust.

The course offers a clear overview of how hazardous areas are defined and classified, the types of risks associated with different zones, and the key safety procedures that must be followed. In addition, it introduces the basic protection concepts used in the certification of Ex equipment, including methods to prevent ignition and ensure safe operation.

A unique aspect of this course is its hands-on practical component. Participants will learn how to identify, install, and terminate certified Ex cable glands and conductors correctly. This blend of theoretical knowledge and applied learning makes the Foundation Plus course especially suitable for technical personnel  including electrical or instrumentation technicians — who wish to build core skills and confidence before progressing to more advanced CompEx certifications such as Ex01–Ex04.
